We did a compression test on engine, 155 to 160PSI, but unfortunately everything had been removed from engine carb, intake, plugs, oil cooler, fuel pump and distributor! I was just informed that you NEVER EVER turn engine over without the distributor in place due to shearing off the distributor drive gear and shaft!!
It is best to do a compression test on a cold motor. It can be diffucult to install the hose the dial mounts to but once you get a couple of threads started use the other end of the hose and spin it in.Theres no certain order to do the test nut write down your pressures and compare the differences.I cant remember what the cylinder pressures . Another item which can affect compression readings is valve adjustment. Make sure engine is stone cold and then adjust valves. Perform another compression test with a fully charged battery and compare results. You want consistent numbers which you seem to have. Hopefully test numbers will increase some.
I did a compression test yesterday for the first time. Results on a 1 year old RJE 2.3 WBX engine 165/165/165/165. Much better than the lo-comp QSC P&L engine that used to be in this rig. Conditions of test: warm engine, all plugs out, WOT, ignition and fuel disabled, fully charged good battery. alright well as for how tight i put the tester on I just twisted the tester line in hand tight. there is no way i could do it other wise. I will do it soon guys but should i squirt oil in them and then test it or do it before the oil. You always do a compression test with the engine hot, carbs wide open, and all plugs removed. The numbers on your gauge really don't mean anything. Those cheap - auto store gauges are not accurate or calibrated to anything. They could be 20-50 PSI off. All that matters is that all 4 cylinders have less than 10% difference.
with #2 being high, and you finding coolant there (odd it would be there when the spark plug is in tight but it COULD be left over from a previous compression test or the second compression test). depending upon the condition of the head water jacket seal surface, you might just get by with a top end gasket set, that includes the fire ring. Use wire to hold the throttle wide open. Or hold down the gas pedal all the way while you crank the engine. _____ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each.
That's a good trick for a 1962 Chevrolet pick-up straight-6 that has never seen 180* or 2,000 rpm in its life. For a hard-working hot air-cooled VW bus 1600 engine with self-cleaning valve temperatures, carbon is a less likely scenario for his modest drop in . Yea that motor is pretty tired. Def. needs new p & c's and a calve job as mentioned above. Don't bother with honing and new rings because piston kits are too cheap. The compression tester should have a check valve that prevents the gauge from dropping off from max reading. On mine, this is a simple Schrader valve system with a valve between the gauge's hose and the gauge itself, and another at the base of the gauge to release. with #2 being high, and you finding coolant there (odd it would be there when the spark plug is in tight but it COULD be left over from a previous compression test or the second compression test). depending upon the condition of the head water jacket seal surface, you might just get by with a top end gasket set, that includes the fire ring.
Nice. I attempted to check compression after 1000 miles on my rebuild, but the car is at my parents' house 200 miles away from my shop, where my home-made tester is, and the 1960s tester that my dad used to use on his Bugs has been in the box for so long that the hose is somewhat less than flexible. Classified ads, photos, shows, links, forums, and technical information for the Volkswagen automobile Also, the higher the rpms the more important coil choice becomes. But we will stay with the compression subject here. While average garage tuners do not have much chance of testing this, a good pointer to whether you have had to retard the timing too much is to add 2-3 octane to the fuel and retune.
The addition of oil during the compression test helps to form a better seal between the piston rings and the cylinder walls to highlight where there is blow by past the ring. The oil added into the cylinders never makes it into the heads so does nothing to seal around the valves/valve guides. Classified ads, photos, shows, links, forums, and technical information for the Volkswagen automobile It does run on all 4 but not smoothly, there is a serious risk of stalling and there is more smoke coming from the right bank. The mechanic is hoping that changing the distributor, plugs & leads will supply the engine with a reliable consistent park which may get it running smoother without the risk of it just stalling every time you try to apply power. What Ratwell is talking about is how to attach a vacuum gauge to assess the condition of the valves and some other components. There is no real way to draw a vacuum on a static engine for leak detection as one or two of the valves is always open somewhere, use the water in a spray bottle as SGK suggests while it idles and listen for a change in the way it .
Found the problem !!! valves in cylinder 2 were open!!! was loosing compression thru valves..adjusted valves, rechecked compression and all cylinders read 120 or plus..put it back and replaced valve covers..both of them leaked..used some gasket maker and . How can new pistons and cylinders have under 110 pounds compression? Have I installed them wrong? Did I check them wrong?
